Guangyang Secondary School Band has grown and matured significantly over the years. Under the direction of band instructors Mr Jasen How, Mr Wilson Ong and Mr Goh Kim Seng, the School Band has been making strides in its level of proficiency. Combined band practices are held twice weekly, and pupils also carry out sectional training as well as footdrill and formation practices. While the training is intensive, it has instilled in pupils a sense of discipline and passion to make good music. Games are also conducted to ensure that band members have fun too.
Besides being able to play well, other aspects of pupils' character development are also encouraged. For instance, they have contributed to the community by participating in numerous outdoor performances such as the ‘Music in the City’ series at Ngee Ann City in July 2007. Other activities such as band camps, held during the March, June and December holidays, helped our members foster a spirit of cooperation within the band.
In Year 2006, the school band participated for the first time in the SYF Assessment for Marching Bands and was awarded the Certificate of Distinction. In the year 2007, under the baton of Mr Wilson Ong, we were awarded the Bronze medal in the SYF Central Judging for Concert Bands. With a bumper crop of 45 recruits in 2007, the GYSS band looks forward to greater achievements and better music…. one band, one sound!!!
BEST SECTION OF THE YEAR 2008: TUBA!
This year Tuba section has crowned the best section. I would like to start with an expression of my gratitude towards these people of whom this award would not have been possible without them. I would like to start by thanking Mr How for always correcting us when we play wrongly, for being patient and always there for us when we need him. Not forgetting, I would like to thank Fadhil and Rebecca for their unconditional and patient guidance of which shaped me into who I am, as a section leader today.
Our section consisting of 4 members - Darryl, Wei Sheng, Sewahang and Hao En - is well bonded in almost every sense. We had fun every time when we met each other and always there to help each other when anyone of us needed help.
In the beginning, we were hardly able to play decently and our dynamics in playing were less than sufficient. However, through these long, trying, periods of endless practicing, as well as mutual encouragement, we were able to overcome these problems -albeit still with some difficulty in pitch accuracy. But I believe that with more time, and a constant investment of effort from our section, we will be able to overcome many more of these technical inabilities and hopefully, become even more accomplished, and affluent as a section.

HOUSE CHAMPION OF THE YEAR 2008: BARACHOIS!
Barachois started out with 12 members last year. We were grouped according to our individual characteristics which helped us to bond better with one another. We always try not to leave anyone out and thus, making everyone feel like they are belonged. We co-operate with each other and we let everyone voice out their opinions. When there are conflicts among us,we do not hold grudges against each other. Instead, we talked things out calmly to solve all the misunderstandings. This maturity in us enable us to work better as a team where together, everyone achieve more! Barachois is a team, a house and a family. That kept our spirits burning to play hard towards one goal, to be crowned the house champion.
Dear guys, you may now link our GYSB Band Blog to your Personal Blog. Thanks & Enjoy!(: Cheers!(:

The origin of this blog is traced back to the era of which our secondary three members in the band were going through the NCO training programme. It was suggested in one of the meeting held among the NCOs, assigning Swee Han and Chun Heng with the task of management in the blog. The idea got suggested during a conversation Chun Heng had with our commandant, Rebecca Ong. And thus giving birth to the blog, gyss-bandd.blogspot.com, on the 15th October, 2007.
The function of this blog is to enable easeful communication between all members of the band – comments and opinions unable to express during normal band practices can be expressed here as hierachies are non-existent. However, band members are reminded to be sensitive and careful with speech in precaution of violation to other band members via derogatory, sarcastic or offensive remarks. Band members are advise to express themselves here on how they feel about practices, band, etc. This would ultimately allow better understanding of every individual in the band as well as forge cohesiveness and stronger bond amongst each other – one band, one sound.
Lastly, we would like to thank a few people for their contributions.

Fadhil,
Swee Han,
Chun Heng
